Grand slam is one word used to describe first responders event hosted by the Jamestown Tarp Skunks Thursday.
The Tarp Skunks in collaboration with various fire departments, law enforcement agencies and the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency hosted a touch-a-truck event at Russell E. Diethrick, Jr. Park, 485 Falconer St., prior to the start of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s Tarp Skunks vs. the Geneva Red Wings home game.
“We’ve partnered with the Tarp Skunks to show that there are fun, affordable things to do in Jamestown and Chautauqua County,” said Jason Sample, the communications and marketing coordinator, for the CCIDA. “Plus, we honor and support our area first responders.”
Several area volunteer fire departments which included Fluvanna, Falconer, Lakewood, Kiantone, and others along with the Jamestown Fire Department, set up displays with their various firefighting equipment for event participants to enjoy, inspect and ask questions about. Additionally, costumed, child-appropriate, TV characters from the Nickelodeon Jr. ‘s animated television series, Paw Patrol, were on hand for pictures and interactions with program attendees.
“This is awesome,” said Jack McKeever, a second grader student at Temple Elementary School. “There’s a lot of fire trucks; my grandmother brought me and my brothers and his friend here for the game; I’m going to get a baseball and get it signed by the Tarp Skunks.”

This mixture of first responders, the CCIDA and the Tarp Skunks has earned laurels of praise from some locally elected government officials.
“This is a grand slam event,” said Jeff Molnar, the mayor of the Village of Bemus Point. “The ballpark is packed, this has not only become a place to watch some great baseball, but a social gathering for many. I, myself, watch the game and work my way around the park visiting with friends and fans.”
The Tarp Skunks general manager and director of business added.
“We honor all our first responders and this partnership with the CCIDA buying out the game is something we’re looking at expanding upon,” said Christian Dolce. “With everything we do, we look at how to take it to the next level. How to make it bigger and better for our fans and the city.”
