2 mock case studies are being featured at the pain management symposium
The dvm360® Directions in Veterinary Medicine (DIVM) symposium focused entirely on pain management kicks off in Miami, Florida this Friday, May 19 through Saturday, May 20, 2023. Each morning of the event will begin with a unique, engaging mock pain management case study and a lecture following it that addresses the case.
On day 1, Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, dvm360 chief veterinary officer, and Fred Wininger, VMD, MS, DACVIM (Neurology) will present a case spotlighting a 4-year-old Female/Spayed schnauzer who hasn't eaten for 48 hours. The dog is experiencing yelping when her owner attempts to pick her up, and she is extremely painful in the abdomen. Following this presentation, the lecture entitled "From the Generalist & Specialist's Perspective. Triage & Stabilization of Abdominal Pain" led by Mariana Pardo, BVSc, MV, DACVECC, will delve into a diagnostic approach to diagnosing, stabilizing, and initial management of the schnauzer. What's more, attendees will learn Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) techniques, the types of fluids to administer, all the while keeping in mind spectrum of care.
On day 2, Christman will present a case of an 11 kg, 2-year-old castrated French bulldog who is acutely down in the pelvic limbs. He is crying substantially after trying to jump onto the couch earlier in the morning. There is no known cardiac disease and the complete blood count/CHEM from 2 months ago is within normal limits. This time, after the presentation, Pardo will be joined by Feliza Lopez, LVT, VTS (ECC), for a lecture entitled "Initial Triage and ER Management" where they will discuss how the veterinarian and veterinary technician can collaborate to overcome the challenges of triaging, stabilizing, and caring for the brachycephalic breed down in the pelvic limbs.
